Testing the look of the base.

Another example of dry-fitting to check the design. This is the assembled bottom cabinet section with a dry-fit of the base unit. The base is the same height as the temporary plywood risers I used, and it looked good by itself on the workbench, but I needed to see how it would look in place before gluing it up.

Playing with blocks to design the top.

The top unit was the last part I built. Though I ended up going with the idea in my sketches, I thought I'd try some alternatives before committing. I wasn't kidding when I said anything in the workshop is fair game for model building. Here I used a glue bottle, offcuts, some of the parts from the base of the "Colony Ship", and some of the earlier "Colony Ship" models to play around with different ideas for the top unit.

Top unit model

A dry-fit of the top unit with slightly different versions of the base and finial box than I ended up using. The design process really does continue right up to the end.
